Custom DIY Shoe Cabinet with Sliding Door
Custom DIY Shoe Cabinet with Sliding Door that with a bit of time, tools and wood any homeowner can make to house the shoes, toys and misc household stuff.
As part of the breezeway/mudroom makeover we built a custom shoe cabinet with a sliding door. This was the first time we have ever built a piece like this with doors and I love how it turned out! We seem to have only 2 feet each around here, but accumulate a ton of shoes. I wanted something that would give us ample space for shoes and other misc items but yet be hidden away if needed. Not interested in having my guests look at our shoes when they walk in the side door. This area is the space between our garage and our main living area. It also has a side door for guests to enter instead of using the front door.
Inspiration for our sliding door
My inspiration for the cabinet with sliding door was modern and simple. Since this was our first time making our own doors we didn’t want to go overly complicated. We went with a basic pattern with the wood running across the door (top corner right). I priced out several of these doors and they cost several hundreds more then what it took us to make our own.
The finished cabinet
The goal in the cabinet design was to have a shelf for everyone in the family that was big enough to house a few pairs of shoes and a basket to hold misc stuff like hats, glasses etc. I also wanted something long and narrow so it wouldn’t take up a lot space as you walked through the area. Although the cabinet is pretty much done I still need to do some touch ups and put some contact paper on each of the shelves for easy cleaning. You can see the last system I had in place here…..it didn’t stay neat and tidy for long.
Despite a system that I think works for my family and for the room, shoes somehow seem to be left on the floor….right in front of the cabinet no less. Oh well, we will get there. One shoe at a time. I will have the step by step instructions in another post but wanted to show you my inspiration and the final outcome of the cabinet.
Door handles that I used can be found here. Sliding Door kit here.

thanks jan…i will
I love the way you converted an empty space in your home as a shoe cabinet. I could never bring myself to use tools, I’d rather have a ready-made one and start using it immediately. Something like this is what I love. https://casagear.com/products/pocillo-wood-shoe-storage-cabinet-by-baxton-studio
