A Painting Lesson that you will want to know

I am sharing an easy painting lesson, that I learned the hard way after spending my time and money on the right color, wrong shade. So if you are a beginner or novice painter, listen up.

As I mentioned here I am giving our breezeway a little refresh with some paint. Since it’s the area between the garage and the main part of our house it gets a lot of traffic. Although, this was not on the immediate project list, the walls needed a major touch up.

The current colors were light French Gray on the walls (50% on the bottom walls, trim and cabinet and 10% on the upper walls). Love the color, just wanted to change it up. You can see the space here.

Since I am still wrapping things up, I wanted to share a easy painting lesson that will save you time and money for your next painting project.

Try to get your paint mixed from the same place, especially if you are customizing the formula.

I had a gallon of Agreeable Gray at 25% of the formula mixed at Home Depot. Came home and put it on the wall. I went ahead and painted a large portion of the space but something said it wasn’t the correct shade. Since I have this same color in my kitchen and main family room I did a comparison and sure enough it was much darker than what I had.

painting tips for beginners

I went back to where I had originally had the color mixed (SW) and got a sample of the color. As you can see from the above photo there was a clear difference. The lighter version was what I was after. Same color, yielding two different results, from two different places. I went back to get a few more gallons to finish up the job.

Agreeable gray and Thunderous used in a hallway

I still have to put another coat of Thunderous (SW) on the bottom portion of the wall and Pure White (Behr) on the ceiling before I can call it a day. I’ll be back to share the finished space. Until then, remember this paint lesson for your next paint project so you can learn to paint with confidence. You can thank me later.
