The Forbidden Caverns in Sevierville, Tennessee
Located in the heart of Sevierville, Tennessee, is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered– the Forbidden Caverns. The caverns offer an unforgettable day trip into the depths of the earth that you’ll want to include on your bucket list.
Exploring the Forbidden Caverns
While in East Tennessee we took a few hours one day to visit the caverns in the Sevierville area. The last time I went, the kids were small, so I thought it would be fun to go back and visit.
My pictures inside the caverns that I took, don’t truly depict the natural beauty of what you will see.
What are the Forbidden Caverns
Discovered in the early 20th century, the caverns have a fascinating past intertwined with tales of prohibition-era moonshining. In the 1920s, a group of loggers stumbled upon the caverns while exploring the dense forests of Sevierville. Word of the discovery quickly spread, attracting curious adventurers eager to explore the underground wonders hidden beneath the surface. Could you imagine stumbling upon underground caves?
In 1967, the caverns were officially opened to the public. The guided tours showcase the stunning geological formations 200 feet below the grounds surface.
What to expect our your tour
You will be greeted by a guide who will lead you through a labyrinth of stalactites, stalagmites, and underground streams. The tour takes about 45 mins. The tour offers insight and knowledge into the geological formations that have been sculpted over millions of years.
Your ticket is good for the day. You can take the guided tour first and go back and walk the caverns again. Although we didn’t see any critters on our visit, you may see blind cave fish, bats, and other creatures.
Planning your Adventure to the Caverns
- The caverns are open 10am-5pm from April 1- Nov 27

- There is a small gift shop where you can pick up a t-shirt or other souvenirs.
