Modern Media Room Reveal
Revealing our modern media room with black walls, raised platform and cozy recliners. Pass the popcorn please!
Our Media room reveal is long overdue….and so was the makeover. But you know what they say, Rome wasn’t built overnight and either was our media room.
When we designed and built our home 23 years ago a media room was definitely in the plan. Since we are the ultimate homebodies having a space that we could enjoy our favorite movies was certainly a bonus to our home. For my original design of the room, I wanted it to look just like a theater.
The room was the coolest space in the house for many years, until that one frightful day when I spilled white paint all over the black carpet. I had just picked up my drop cloth and then the spillage happened. The way the spill happened it left an ‘almost’ cool graffiti look and I was tempted to leave it but….. I shut the door and the room just sat. Time and budget took priority with other projects.
Then one day I told my husband that these are the days that we need to have this space for the kids, friends and our family, so it moved up on the project list. I began to put a design together that would create a more modern grown up space for my movie loving family.
How to create modern media room
The plan
First thing to go was the red chairs ( they were good while they lasted) followed by the 20 year old black carpet….with white paint stains. We debated about removing the raised platform, but to maximize the number of chairs in the space we decided to keep it. The room measures 15×16.
Using my design plan and inspiration photos, I loved how adding a wood wall really helped to add warmth with the black walls. Adding some trim detail on the other walls gives some visual interest. My original plan was to add some wallpaper in the insets, but have decided to leave it alone for now. I am digging a more minimal feel in the space.
Flooring Choice
I went back and forth about the flooring options and finally settled on a low pile gray carpet. The other consideration was to do the same waterproof hardwood flooring that we have in the rest of the downstairs area. Because we tend to appreciate loud sound effects, the carpet helps to absorb the sound in the space. We were able to save some money by installing the carpet ourselves. We rented the tools and got the carpet at Home Depot.
Seating
I was most excited about getting some new modern powered recliners for the space. Since my kids will use the room the most, I let them have some input on chair style and type. Of course cup holder and touch recliner were priorities…teenagers are lazy. A bonus was the USB ports in the side compartments. These are vegan leather and are soft. They fully recline and are easy to clean.
Electronics
We upgraded the TV with an 84 inch LG 4k , so nobody has a problem seeing the screen. 🙂 To assist with the sound in the room we utilized the receiver and the speakers that we already had. Our favorite movies have never looked and sounded so good.
