How to paint metal counter stools
Wondering how to paint metal counter stools? Get all the details on an easy way to refresh metal counter stools with some paint. Refresh your counter or bar stools so they look new again in no time at all.
I’ve had these counter stools for a few years now. The stools were intended to go downstairs in our game room but have lived here ever since. They originally were silver in color but I sprayed them champagne bronze a couple of years ago.
I have considered getting new stools more than once, but these stools get a lot of traffic so metal is a great option for my active family. Besides, they are stackable and can easily be moved outdoors if needed.
Not my proudest moment, but here’s how the stools were looking before I took action and painted them. I had already sprayed the other two.

What you need for this project
Spray paint– I used Champagne Bronze for this project.
Comfort Grip – This gadget that you attach to the spray can works wonders on your hands if you are spray painting projects like this (that are more than a quick job)
Painting Process
Step 1 – Clean your stools with a good all-purpose cleaner. I use TSP for most of my paint projects, if not I use a good general cleaner. This will ensure that all dirt, oils, and grime are removed and your paint will adhere properly.
Step 2- Paint your stools. In a well-ventilated area use light and even coats ( I did 2 coats on the stools) to apply your spray paint. If you don’t use a spray paint formulated for ‘any surface’ you will want to use paint specifically for metal surfaces.
Step 3- Let the stools dry. Follow the instructions on the can for the dry time before sitting on the stools.
Not a bad refresh for less than $10 bucks and 10 minutes (not including drying) of my time….don’t you think?
FAQs for painting metal counter stools
Do you have to use a primer and paint when painting metal stools? Not always, depends on what you are painting over. This particular color did not come in a primes/paint formula.
Where is the best way to start painting a stool? I always like to start top down when painting a stool using light and even strokes.
How do I take the old paint off metal chairs? If your surface is not smooth and you want to take the paint off before painting you can either use a natural removal like vinegar or a paint remover specifically for metal products. You want a remover that is non-corrosive and will not damage the metal.
Can you sand metal stools before painting? Yes, if you have several coats of paint that need to be removed, you can use a fine-grit sand block of 220+.
