If you have been to a garden center in the last couple of weeks you have seen the beautiful potted blooms in a wide range of bold tones and rich autumn hues. Mums are available in a wide range of colors and sizes. They are low maintenance and can be kept in containers or grown in your landscape bed or garden.

If the container that I bought them in is decent-looking, I will keep them in the container. If not, I will move them into a different container. For many years I treated mums as an annual. Now, when Fall is over I’ll plant them in the garden to enjoy year-round.

Simple Tips for your mums

Mums need 6-8 hours of sunlight  Your mums will let you know if they aren’t getting enough sun when they begin to look taller with fewer blooms.

Water regularly  Mums like water and don’t like to be dry. They will wilt when they need water.

Plant in Well-Drained Soil  If you are planting your mums in the ground make sure it is in well-drained soil. If your soil is not the best supplement with topsoil or compost.

Pinch Me Back  Every wonder why mums keep such a roundish compact shape. They like to be pinched. Pinching off new growth encourages mums to keep their compact size and shape and actually creates more blooms.  Don’t forget to remove faded blooms, which can also extend the bloom time.

I settled on a pretty orange/rust color this season for my mum selection. I think they look perfect on my fall porch this season.

    1. Hi Jill, as long as they are protected ( winterized in a pot or in the ground covered with mulch) during the winter they should pop back up in the spring. I am in zone 8 where I live. What planting zone are you located?

  1. Goodness me did I need this! Our mums (second batch now) all look dead despite keeping them in their same plastic pots with holes and watering everyday. And in full sun. Ugh! I’ll try popping off the dead tops. My kids tell me to keep them like that because they are perfect for Halloween (insert rolling eyes). Hope y’all are doing well! Happy fall. pinned
