Subtle Changes to the Kitchen and Dining Area
Subtle changes to my kitchen and dining area with a new coat of paint in SW Agreeable Gray. The perfect color if you like white on the walls but crave a bit of color.
Subtle Changes to the Kitchen and Dining Area
My home has seen its share of color changes during the last 19 years. My mantra…..it’s only paint, besides it makes me happy. An area that I tackled earlier this year ( but never told you about) was in the kitchen and dining area. Of course, it was all due to the snowball effect when I painted my masterbath, SW Agreeable Gray. I thought it would be the perfect neutral base in my Kitchen and Dining area. Interestingly enough, it reads more beige in my bathroom and grayer in the kitchen.
The previous color in this space was Pure White. Although I love white on walls, it doesn’t do well in certain rooms in my house. As many windows and light coming into this space, my kitchen is the darkest room ( with windows) in the house. Agreeable Gray gives me both subtle color and helps to keep things bright.
I am considering changing the Iron Ore color which is on the island and the wall and cabinets at some point. Since the fireplace stone is not going anywhere, I am trying to pull from the natural colors of the stone. I was experimenting on the mantel, hence the color difference. That is not the color I will be using.
How pretty is that first morning light pouring into your space? I decided to switch up the table with two wicker chairs that I have had for 25+ years. They sit a bit low, but for now, they work. A few months ago I got this charcoal and olive-colored rug and I love it. Love it so much, I ordered a second one for my family room.
Did you ever read the love story about my wood table? You can read it here. Once you read it, you will understand why this table will forever be in my home.
This is the look into the kitchen from the Dining area and before and after. The previous color on the island ( before the Iron Ore) was called Blustey Sky, a real pretty blue-gray. You can see the original kitchen with its cherry-colored cabinets and red walls here. Yes, my taste has changed over the years! 🙂
Here’s the view when you first walk into the kitchen from the main hallway and entry from the breezeway. The island in this picture is reading more black than it really is. Iron Ore is more charcoal in color. I had to turn the exposure up when I took the picture.
I’m sitting tight with any other changes that I want to make in this space until the colder weather sets in and I am forced to work inside. I am going to have to address the wood knots peeking out on the ceiling. Ugh. I even primed the ceiling before I painted. My island has a few scratches and knicks in it, so I need to sand down and repaint. This is where a new color might appear.
Speaking of outside….. Notice the cute little pumpkin on the mantel? I grew them in the garden this year! For many years, I have always wanted to grow my own pumpkins. Albeit the pumpkins are little this year, it’s a start.
What have you painted lately?

Our Ethan Allen dining room table was the first really nice piece of furniture we bought after buying our first home many years ago. We had it refinished about 5 years ago, and we just love it. To update our look we donated our rush seat ladder back chairs and replaced them with Parsons chairs from Ballard Design. We topped them with creamy white slipcovers. We will always keep that table even when we decide to downsize in a few years. That table will simply have to fit wherever we go. We understand how you feel about your table, some things are just too precious to get rid of.
Love the new color, Laura! I think it pairs beautifully with your stonework.
