How to care for a Kimberly Queen Fern
Tips for caring for a Kimberly Queen fern. This fern is so big and beautiful and would look amazing on any patio or porch.
I have been a loyal Boston Fern gal for as long as I have been living in the south. As soon as they show up at the garden section….I’m buying. I have grown them successfully indoors and outside on the porch. I may be boasting a bit, as Boston Ferns are so simple to maintain and care for.
How to care for a Kimberly Queen Fern
I was never really familiar with a Kimberly Queen until a friend had them on her patio. They were so big and beautiful. You can see where this is going. As soon as they were available in the garden section…I bought a few to put in the containers on the front porch. Still being loyal to the Boston Fern, I included those as well.
This picture shows a side-by-side comparison between the two ferns. Both pretty ferns, the Kimberly Queens leaves are longer and more upright compared to the Boston Fern.
Caring for Kimberly Queen Ferns
- Although Kimberly Queen can withstand sunlight, an ideal placement would be an area that receives some shade in the afternoon
- The Ferns need regular moisture especially when planted outdoors. Do not let the soil dry out and you should water when the soil’s surface feels slightly dry to the touch. Not enough water will produce brown leaves that will begin to fall off.
- Cut off stems that have died back as needed.
- Kimberly Queen Ferns can be grown indoors and outdoors
- The fern can be treated as a perennial up to Zone 9
Last year I treated the ferns as an annual. This Fall, I am going to move the ferns into a shady spot in the backyard or into the woods to see how they do in the North Georgia climate. I’ll be sure to report back.

The Kimberly Queens are nicer looking than the Boston Ferns I agree! You know what I found out about 10yrs ago??? We have roadside or in the woods ferns here in NC. Well I planted one in my garden and it got big and beautiful and comes back year after year with no maintenance. So then I tried one in container and same as the ground ones…big and beautiful but I water occasionally these. Haven’t bought Ferns since!
