Tips for picking out this years pumpkin
Pumpkin Picking 101 and tips for picking out this years pumpkin from the local pumpkin patch
We were on pumpkin duty yesterday at the local pumpkin patch. It was a a family first and was such an enjoyable time ….especially since Fall showed up in Northeast Georgia. I imagine sitting at the patch selling pumpkins days earlier in 95 degree temps just wouldn’t compare to the 70’s that we had. The only thing that could have better ( and I am certainly not complaining) was to have the sun shining.
I must admit I have always been a traditional gal when it comes to pumpkin choices. My requirement list is not long, just orange, round and big enough for the kids to carve. Yesterday I broke tradition and picked up a few ‘outside the norm’ pumpkins . I also learned the names of a few pumpkins in case you are getting ready to hit your local pumpkin patch and load up on a some of your own.
Wee Bee Littles are Tangerine-Softball size pumpkins Spookies are cantaloupe size. Both are perfect to include in your Fall decor.
Equivalent in size to a Spookie but in white is called a Snowball
and of course Mini’s come in white too
These Winged gourds were pretty in an odd way and strangely interesting at the same time. This assortment is a mixture of Gizmo’s ( look like the starfish) and Elf House Gourds ( the orange). Any of these would be perfect as a decorative arrangement or in a centerpiece. I must live a very sheltered life from gourds because this was a first time I have seen either of these. Have you?
These days it’s not just orange pumpkins that you will see. There are green/blue which are called Queensland Blue, blush colored and white/orange/green. Some with bumps, spots, random colors and all perfectly imperfect. Did you know there are about 50 types of pumpkins? I didn’t and I don’t claim to know all the varieties that were at our pumpkin patch, so I will just show you a few different types just in case you want to step out of your orange loving pumpkin heart this year too.
Couldn’t end this pumpkin education course 🙂 without some pics of my sweet Lily working it and having entirely too much fun at the same time!
What are you favorite pumpkin colors or types ? To see how I have used my ‘orange’ pumpkins in the past click here.
I hope some of my pumpkin picking tips will be helpful when you are picking out this years pumpkins.
grateful
for family time
Hey Laura, I live in Northeast GA. and was wondering where this pumpkin patch is, we’d love to go . I’m a sucker for the cute little ones and these look great.
So many pumpkins, and I love every variety and color. I have always been a little partial to white but you have me rethinking this! Happy Wednesday, my friend!
I would also like to know where this pumpkin patch is located. Great looking “outside the norm” pumpkins!
I had no idea there were so many names for pumpkins! So interesting. They get more ‘different’ with each year! I love all of the not so ordinary ones, but sometimes the plain old orange one is a good change! No matter, for me they are simply squirrel food!
Jane
they sure do. I can only imagine what other colors we will see at the pumpkin patch in years to come.
