Black and White Guest Bath Reveal

Black and White Guest Bath Reveal with a touch of whimsy and color

black and white bath reveal

It’s been forever and a day since we actually finished the guest bathroom that I first told you about here. Just to fill you in on the background. The bathroom had some water damage from water running off the sink area so we needed to make some repairs. Since its a 17 year old bathroom I felt it was time to give the space some updates and a new look…..all on a budget. Which by the way, I “kinda’ stuck to. The final touch was  a whimsy piece of art that I picked up at Homegoods the other day to finally complete the space.

Here’s how the bath looked before the changes.

The finished space.

Here’s what we did

We removed the hardwood floors and replaced with these black and white cement tiles. I love the interest that it gives this tiny little space. Having tile in the bathroom makes much more sense to me from a cleaning perspective. My hubby and I tackled the tile job and you can get all my tips here that I used.

We replaced the drywall and applied wood planks. Years ago I applied a faux stone application using drywall  paste and tape. Loved the look when I did it,I just didn’t think how permanent the finish would be. We took the drywall off before applying the wood so it would maximize the room. Every inch counts in a small space. By the way, I find photographing small bathrooms to be extremely challenging but I think it gives you a pretty good idea of the changes we made.

We used the existing cabinet but gave it some new color called Web Gray ( same as my kitchen island) and added the brass pulls. I added a new sink and installed a new faucet in the wall, which I absolutely love. You can find the sink here and the faucet here.

Initially I was going to use a wood counter top but after my sweet hubby made one, I decided I wanted a natural stone surface. The stone will be easier to keep clean and to repel water. The piece of quartz was the item that put me slightly over budget….by $250.00.

I used some spray paint to give the existing hardware ( towel, toilet paper holder and garbage can) a color change and brought in a round brass mirror to tie it all together.

Can we talk about the reason why I didn’t show you this space sooner. I couldn’t find a piece of art for that wall until I saw this sweet little piece at HomeGoods the other day. It ultimately wasn’t what I had in mind ( actually not even sure what I wanted) but it works. It’s fun and adds a pop of color to black and white space.  The spots are actually raised so its 3 dimensional. Besides, you know we love our animals around here! Oh, I changed out the light since the other was a bit dated and heavy for the space. I got this one from Pottery Barn on super sale.

  1. I Love It!!! I am in the process of a painfully slow re-model of a full guest bath…I cant tell but is your vanity black or a very dark green type of color…It’s very interesting. Oh and I know exactly what you meant out the picture, sometimes something can sit unfinished for weeks because of something like your blank wall and tying it together with the colorful picture!! That ended up coming together great! Did you buy it for that room specifically?? Well its perfect all the same..Happy Fall!!

  2. Love it! Of course, I love black and white with gold accents the most! 😂 The tile floor is stunning as well as the walls. Great job, as usual! Love the art work ~ I think every space needs a touch of whimsy! 😉 There’s so much strife in our world today and I think having pieces that inspire happiness in our homes is vital! I also have to say that your toilet tissue sparks the “over or under” discussion! 😂
    Have a blessed day!

  3. The bathroom turned out great! We have a small mudroom bath that has wallpaper so to avoid taking it off we decided to plank the walls in there. Nice doggie, and I prefer over but as along as it is on the roll I don’t mind under.
