How to Paint Pour
For your next DIY art project try the Paint Pour technique. It’s not only simple but a fun activity to do during a girls or couples night out.
Recently I had the chance to experience a painting technique called ‘Paint Pour’. This technique has been around a while although I had never done it. I have a few paintings in my office using this technique.
Basically the technique involves pouring Acrylic paint on a canvas to create one-of-a-kind works of art. Even if you’ve never painted before and would not consider yourself an artist, this technique is easy. With the right supplies and a few basic instructions it’s something that anyone can do…..including me.
What is Paint Pouring?
Paint pouring is a technique where acrylic paint is mixed with a medium and then poured onto a surface. The design of the art is determined by the manner in which you move your surface and the paint flows with other colors. Colors are poured directly from individual cups, or can be combined and poured together. What’s great about this technique is that no two pieces of art are alike and the creative options are endless…like the mess it will leave.
Supplies Needed
Canvas or other paper
Assortment of Acrylic Paints
Pouring medium- a pouring medium is mixed with paint to help the paint flow and blend. You can also use glue but does not work as well as a medium.
Small beverage cups to hold your paints and to hold your painting up off the table
Stir sticks
Large disposable pan for paint drips
Something to cover your table or paint area
What you do
Prepare your work area and cover with newspaper, tin foil or wax paper. It will get messy.
Prepare your colors with the paint medium. Follow the directions on the mix of paint and medium according to the medium you are using.
Set up your canvas and start pouring. Yes….that easy.
A few things to keep in mind:
Pick up your canvas and slowly tilt it in one direction at a time until the paint approaches the edge of the canvas.
Pour off just enough paint so there’s not a thick puddle on the surface and without pouring off the best part of your design.
Continue tilting in different directions until your entire canvas surface and sides are covered and you’re happy with the overall design and color patterns.
The result of this pour
This art technique is so forgiving that you can’t really screw up. If you are totally new to this technique start on a smaller canvas and work yourself up to bigger pieces and design. The most important thing to keep in mind when you paint pour is to have fun ….and pour away! Have you ever tried painting pouring?
