How to create a Coastal Inspired Bedroom on a budget

How to create a Coastal Inspired Bedroom on a budget that would work for a growing teen or guest room.

It was just a matter of time that my teenage son would outgrow his Jedi decals and StarWar themed bedroom that I created for him about 8 years ago. You can see the post that I shared the reveal in here. I think it was this mama dragging her feet in denial that my first born is a teenager and would want something a bit more age appropriate to look at when he went to bed each night. I must still be in denial since I have had this room done for several months now and just sharing.

The transition started a bit before I actually finished the room. I peeled off the decals, got some generic bedding and moved the star wars stuff out. The room just stayed like that for several months. Lacking a lot of personality and direction until one day I saw what was the inspiration for the room in a Pottery Barn catalog. This was the direction I wanted to take his room….until I went to order the curtains and duvet cover and they were no longer available. It had been several months that I held on to this image.

Which wasn’t entirely such a bad thing as I was able to design his space for about $250.00. Clearly it would have been a whole lot more going the original route.

Here’s what I did

Since the room already had the wainscot on the bottom I just gave it a fresh coat of white paint. The upper portion was painted in a color called Misty from SW.

The bunk bed was dismantled and the bottom portion was moved to my other son’s room ( his room got a revamp as well). I moved the black iron bed from a guest room that we no longer utilized. I got the bed several years at Ikea. The dresser is the same one he has had since he was two, the bedside table from PB that I have had for many years and the bookcase was originally intended for the screen porch ( see this post here ) . The fan has been in the room. I got it here.

The artwork behind the bed that I have had for 20 years was a surprisingly great addition. The gray curtains that I also got at IKEA years ago use to be in my hubby’s office and are perfect to block out the sun when my teenager decides to sleep in on the weekend. Not like that will happen.

New bedding completes the space

How perfect are the strip duvet and matching sheets for a coastal themed space! The cover and sheets are so soft and wash really well….meaning don’t look like a wrinkled mess out of the dryer….not that my teenage son would mind or probably even notice. The colors are a perfect complement to the room and were such an inexpensive purchase. You can find them here.

The gray and white stripped rug was the biggest splurge coming in at about $146.00.

We are both happy with how the room turned out. Now I just need to figure out how to stop him from growing up so fast!
