A Thrifty and stylish change to bathroom using a can of spray paint
Welcome to this months Thrifty Style Post. I am super excited about all the thrifty inspiration the group is sharing today. Although some of the projects are more Spring related, mine was done in the Spring during a recent change that I made when we were renovating our guest bath. I figured since we just finished last week and it’s Springtime , that should count…right?
A Thrifty and stylish change to bathroom
Before we started the bathroom project I was so good about putting together an iron clad project plan and budget. The only problem was that I did not budget for new bathroom accessories…garbage can, toilet paper holder and towel rack. Ideally these things don’t necessarily kill the budget but it’s money that doesn’t have to be spent if you have accessories that are in decent shape and a can of spray paint…and I did.
Prep your items
Having painted more then a few things in my time, prep is the most important step. You can basically paint anything ( just ask my hubby) but if the surface is not clean ( no dust or dirt) the paint will not adhere properly. I generally use an all purpose cleaner with a lint free rag for things like this, although I can honestly say that I have never painted a toilet paper holder…..and why not! I think the craziest thing I ever spray painted was this.
Once upon I use to buy fancy and expensive garbage cans for my bathroom….not anymore. I got this one here and it didn’t look this pretty when I bought it.
Less Is More
After shaking your can well ( that’s important too to get the paint moving inside the can) it’s a lot better to use multiple thin coats of paint instead of one heavy coat. It takes minimal time to add additional coats of paint if needed and a whole lot more time to correct your over spray. Less is more when it comes to spray painting. For this project I used a brass finish to match the handles that I bought for the cabinet.
I used this brass finish on my accessories. Super thrifty and smart way to add style to a bath or any room in your house. The moral of the story is….you can paint just about anything. What have you painted lately?

Super smart idea. A nice pop of gold really elevates the guest bath and makes it shine.
It turned out beautiful, you did good. And like beer, bathrooms are all season!
Laura – the new finish is gorgeous! We love the power of paint and how inexpensive it can be to give energy and life to existing pieces. Your bathroom is beautiful!
Laura completely agree. If pieces still look good grab paint. New paint fixes everything. Matches great.
Cindy
I love spray paint! I use it a lot. I even bought Chalk Paint in the spray can for a cabinet. But, I never thought of painting my hardware in the bath. Now you’ve got me thinking. 🤔
I love the satiny gold glow of your bathroom accessories, Laura! I am planning a really cheap (like, literal peeps chirping) bathroom update this summer and I had totally let it fly out of my head that I could just spray paint all the details in there. Now, I just need to figure out what finish I want????? Thanks so much for the thrifty inspiration.
Laura I love the bathroom! I have a similar floor in my bathroom and I just love it! The colors you chose are my colors too! Beautiful!
Oh my gosh! Your “new” bathroom accessories look amazing! I’m currently scanning my house for something to try that spray paint on. 🙂
ha- i know I get that way with spray paint too!
This is such a great idea, Laura! I love having matching accessories in a bathroom. It gives it a clean, finished look! Lovely! So great linking up with you this week! xoxo
thanks Kristi!
I love this update Laura! Your bathroom essentials look so (dare I say) classy in the brass! I am one of those impatient spray painters who usually ends up with big blobs and drips on my piece :\ Thanks for the tips…I’ll try to remember for next time, lol!!
I will let my bathroom know you think it’s classy! 🙂
Great job of this bathroom! It really is amazing what you can do with a spray can! Your accessories look so pretty! Honestly, Laura, you just do such a great job with everything you do with your décor. Your home is just beautiful! Enjoy! Happy for you that your bathroom is finished now!
thank you so much Mary-Ann
I have always enjoyed your taste and style. Thanks for your tips and tricks. I can definitely use them since we just moved. I want something fresh and new. But, don’t want to spend a ton on accessories. Thanks so much.
thanks Meegan. i appreciate your kind comment.
Jaw Drop! Gorgeous
Thank you Deborah!
Ha! I bought a cheap trashcan with the intent of spray painting it, too! I am so jealous that your bathroom redo is finished. We’ve been moving along slowly because we have been creating a new bathroom out of a small bedroom. Love all of your “new” brass accessories!
