How to strip paint without the smell and Dust
How to strip paint without the smell and Dust using a product called Citristrip
You would think I would learn my lesson and not paint over perfectly good wood….but I haven’t. What I have learned though is how to remove layers of paint without all the smell of paint removers and dust from a sander. I tell myself at least I learned something.
I showed you this cabinet in my kitchen area here. When the cabinets were built 16 years ago I had them stained a cherry red color. As my taste through the years has changed so did the cabinet color. It has gone from stained, to white to now back to natural wood on the top. When I went from stained to white I used my sander to get the slickness of the protective covering off. Despite using the little dust collector on the sander, it still made a huge mess with dust flying everywhere. This was the before of what I was working with.
The product that I used
This time I decided to use a product that I have used a few other times in the past called Citristrip. I love this stuff. Not only did it get the job done, it smells good and was not as messy as some other paint strippers.
Basically you just spray it on and wait before removing the paint. The longer you let the Citristrip set, the easier it will be for your paint to come off. I use this multi tool scrapper.
The end result
For the more stubborn areas ( because I was impatient and didn’t wait like I should have) I reapplied the spray and scraped again until the paint was removed. When I was done, I took a sanding block to go over the entire surface.
I am trying to figure out what product that I want to use for a protective coat. I used tongue oil and it made it more orangey than I would like, so I will eventually go back and sand it down and start all over. I’ll let you know how that goes.
Have you used this product before and if so, what do you think of it? Tell me in the comments so we can all hear your review.

I apply the citristrip and cover with plastic wrap and leave for 24 hours. Easy Peasy. No stubborn areas.
i will have to try the plastic wrap. my problem is I get too impatient.
Wow, that is amazing. I love how pretty the top came out.
thanks marty. it’s good stuff.
Looks like a great product! I am going to check out where I can buy this here. It just looks so easy to use! Thanks for the info! I love DIY’s! It is so rewarding to see what you have accomplished! And, needless to say, you are saving some money for other things!
I had a good experience using it on my baluster and railings! On certain areas it took two applications even though I would leave it on overnight but it was so easy to get off. I highly recommend it and you can buy it on Amazon. It does have a mild odor but nothing extreme. I will use it again.
i love how easy the paint just comes off. Hope you are having a great week!

Hi Laura, I recently read on The House with the Silving Lining how Shauna had her kitchen cabinets stained without compromising the natural color (too yellow or too orange) . Check it out for your countertop!
P.S. LOVE the blue you chose for the cabinets.
