Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Reveal
Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Reveal
If you have been following my friends Modern Farmhouse reveal, I saved the best for last….the kitchen. Not that the exterior changes weren’t amazing, or the Living Room and Dining Room weren’t beautiful, but something about the kitchen, and how they updated and transformed a desperately needed 70’s space. The best part of the makeover is that all of the changes were cosmetic and done on a budget with some really clever ideas that I can’t wait to share with you.
Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Reveal
Before we get to the reveal let’s take a look at what they started with. Brown, galley style, typical 70’s kitchen. The kitchen had good bones and the layout was suitable for their immediate needs unlike the Living Room where they needed to take some walls down. Time, patience and a few cosmetic changes helped to transform the kitchen into a beautiful, functional space.

The changes
Since my friends hope to do a total kitchen renovation in a couple of years, the changes they made were cosmetic but enough to make it functional and look beautiful until later when they are ready.
Painting
Let’s talk about what they did. All the walls got painted in SW Repose Grey . The cabinets were in decent shape and just needed some paint and some updated hardware. The lower cabinets were painted in SW Dovetail and the upper’s were done in SW Pure White. All semi-gloss finish. The stainless hardware was from Home Depot.
Storage
Because the house lacked some storage issues my pals had to be creative and incorporate additional space for pantry items. An old hutch was placed on an unused wall and a closet was converted into a small pantry. An empty space between studs and an antique door cut to fit the space makes a functional storage closet used for canned goods.. The door they found was just cleaned up and hung. The fun pop of color on the door adds a bit of whimsy to the neutral kitchen palette. In the future renovation plan, the upper cabinets by the window will be replaced with open shelving.

Lighting
Groovy track lighting was replaced for some farmhouse style pendants and chandelier. Additional recessed lighting was also installed.
Appliances
All the appliances except for the cook top were replaced with one’s that my pal found on Craigs list and the rehab stores. If you are on a budget these sources are a great place to start looking if you are not ready to commit to high end appliances.
Countertops and backsplash and sink
70’s style back-splash and laminate counter tops were replaced to update the space. Although black counters weren’t the first choice of color for the kitchen, when they were looking at replacing the counter tops the cost just got more than what they wanted to spend for cosmetic changes, so they decided on spending $200 for a product from here. The back-splash were peel and stick glass mosaics. Both projects were extremely budget friendly and easy to do. The shallow and dated sink and faucet were also replaced.

Flooring
The faux stone linoleum was replaced with the same flooring that was used throughout the first floor. You can read more about that here. The one regret my friend had was ripping up the original floor so quickly when they were demoing….they got a bit excited. Happens. For months she lived with a sub floor that she covered with cheap grey indoor/outdoor carpeting, which is also great solution but the linoleum would have been just fine until the entire flooring project was complete. Lesson…..an ugly floor in the kitchen is better than no floor at all. Remember that.
Laundry Area
Wasted space above the washer and dryer turned into a space for the dog crate. Alongside the stacked washer and dryer , my friends built a pet area and laundry counter which reclaimed valuable space in their kitchen area. Since the doors were removed, a wood wall and open shelving was added to look functional and pretty, besides being quite comfortable for the dog.

Wasn’t that fun! Hope you enjoyed the changes just as much as I did sharing them. Do you have the patience to take on a full home renovation?
grateful
for patience
Amazing what a little paint and new lighting can do. Love the laundry and what a genius idea for a pantry.
Wow Laura your before and after is AMAZING!!!! Love your kitchen so much 🙂
This is very interesting and informative for me. We have decided to stay in our starter home for about 5 more years until we can find our forever home. In that time, we’d like to begin updating the house throughout with new floors, update the baths and kitchen, and add some outdoor living areas for resale. I tried to find a source for the flooring, but I didn’t see one. If it’s there and I missed it, I’m sorry! Could you please provide the flooring information and how it’s holding up with a dog? Thanks for the inspiration for what can be accomplished with a little time, money, effort, sweat, and paint!
