5 ways to set your table without using a traditional tablecloth

I think I have owned one traditional table cloth….okay, maybe three in my entire life. Although we are not terribly fancy at our dinner table, I do enjoy setting a pretty table during special occasions.  Today I want to share 5 ways to set your table without using a traditional tablecloth . Ideas that may help to inspire your own tablesetting this season.

I’m joining my thrifty style pals this month for more ideas and inspiration on how to use what you have to make it work. All the links will be at the end of the post.

Flat Sheet

I started using alternative tablecloths in a desperate situation when setting an Easter table at my sisters house years ago. Ha…she does not do traditional tablecloths either.  When trying to cover a less then pretty table I was scrambling with trying to cover it and came up with a flat sheet as the best alternative. btw….flat sheets work better then fitted.

Curtain Panels

I  had some unused curtain panels that I was never going to use again so I decided to make them more functional one year and cover my thanksgiving table. By placing two panels side by side on my table they covered my table completely. The best part, nobody even knew. Get more simple table tips here.

Wall tapestry

This was the latest creative idea that I had using a faux tablecloth for my Thanksgiving table this year. I had purchased this wall tapestry to hang over my mantel but when it didn’t work out I decided to use it on my table instead.

Fabric remnants

This idea is perfect for all that fabric remnants just sitting in your sewing stash. You may have to be creative on how you position it on your table based on how much fabric you have like I did with a fall brunch table that I set last year.

Brown Craft Paper

You can do a lot with brown craft paper. Easy would be just rolling out on your table. Done. A more timely way, would be to grab a favorite stencil and go to town creating something special like I did a few years ago here.

One more idea…..don’t use anything. Your table will look just as lovely because of the food and the company around it. What creative idea do you have for covering up the table that’s not on my list? Let me know in the comments, we all want to be inspired.

  1. I have had to be creative with my table cloths as well, usually because the table is longer than any I can buy. But I never thought of a sheet, that opens up all sorts of possibilities!

  2. Not much more useful in the world than a roll of brown paper! Except for a flat sheet maybe. Both would be versatile for a long table and easy to clean up. Have a great Thanksgiving!

  3. I have a huge antique table from England that normal table covers do not fit. I have used quilts and bedspreads before.
This year I am using a painter’s drop cloth. $ 20 Home Depot.

  4. I remember the year you stenciled the brown kraft paper. I thought that was very clever. I have used quilts and scarves on tables, but somehow the flat sheet idea totally slipped past me! Thanks for the idea!

  5. Laura….love them all…My fav has been an inexpensive flat white sheet…with a table protector underneath…with makers at each setting so people can doodle…document their blessings and whatever they want to say!…(but has to be something nice! 🙂 )
