The latest project around Duke Manor Farm….Board and Batten.

Even though there’s a few other unfinished projects around here staring me in the face, I wanted to show you the latest project around Duke Manor Farm…. Board and Batten. This is our soon to be music room. I am calling it the music room but the only instrument in the room will be the piano. Maybe I should call it the piano room?

Progress of the room

I am already giddy and haven’t even finished it yet. I still have to do some caulking and painting and should be done later this week. I will have all the details of how easy and inexpensive this project is in a later post.

If you remember I had wallpaper in up in here but something about the white in the pattern looked aged. I think it was because the white in the pattern wasn’t the same white on the ceiling and walls and it bugged me. Here is the room last Fall.

Inspiration for my project

When we decided to move the table into our kitchen area and put the piano in here, I was looking for a replacement wallpaper. I was all over the place in what I wanted. Bold, classic, color, no color. One day on  instagram this picture stopped me in my tracks. This was exactly what I wanted in the space. I couldn’t find the source, but thank you whoever you are!

I have seen many board and batten patterns but something about this pattern looked like it would work well in my room. The similar baseboard and crown moldings made me more confident in my decision to move forward. But first things first, removal of the wallpaper.

What I thought was going to be a daunting, messy project could not have been any easier. I just literally started from the bottom and pulled the pieces up until they came off.  I was done in less then 5 minutes. The glue that they apply to the back of paper today is designed to make the removal easier. There was no residue left on my walls at all.  Not like the papers of years ago where you would be peeling, steaming and pulling the paper off.

Chandelier

Next time you see the space I will have  the room finished and playing twinkle twinkle on the piano. By the way, my chandelier is currently on sale. I have the large one.

Until then….

  1. It looks gorgeous, Laura! You did a great job and I admire you tackling it yourself. Its so nice that we can get such inspiration through social media (I love the floors in that picture!), when back in the day we only had a handful of monthly magazines. No wonder decorating is so fun these days!

Can’t wait to see the finished job. So who is the pianist in the fam?

  2. WOW! This is going to be a treat. Can’t wait to see the finished project. Now I have to ask – will you not have a formal dining room any longer (just the table in the kitchen)? Most of us don’t use it often enough to dedicate that much real estate to it and I have been pondering doing something like this for a while. Just wondering. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Hello! Thank you for praying for my daughter, Johanne! I will put you and your family on my prayer list. I no longer read blogs except for Diana which I have started following again. God bless you and your family! Please take care!
