Outdoor Patio Umbrella Tips

Outdoor patio umbrella tips for the Summer to keep you cooler and protected from the sun

There is one thing my backyard does not lack… the sun.  During the summer months, it is hard to stay cool out there unless you are in the pool or under an umbrella. I wanted to share a few umbrella options. Options that have helped to minimize the sun exposure without breaking the bank….since the pool already did that. I also wanted to share a few tips that will be helpful if you are shopping for outdoor umbrellas this summer.

Our goal is to build a covered cabana in this spot, but for now, some shade around the pool is needed.

When we finished the pool last year, I purchased these umbrellas. Super cute with the navy stripes on the inside and the blue on the out. A year later these umbrellas still look brand new. The tops do not show any sign of fading. The double layer really shields any sun from peeking in. I also bought this umbrella ( super cute) to complement the other. Unfortunately, it broke when we had a huge thunderstorm and I didn’t put it down.

Tip #1- when an impending storm is approaching….put down your umbrella.

Since shade was needed I bought some replacements. Knowing a covered cabana is in the future, I don’t want to spend a ton on umbrellas, so I bought these less expensive umbrellas in a fun aqua color.

It provides decent shade, although it is a bit translucent. Although the product description says fade resistant, after one year I noticed some fading on the top. Hopefully, it will last a season or more. During the off-season, I store all of my patio cushions and umbrellas to prevent them from further wear and tear.

Tip #2. To prevent additional exposure to your umbrella fold up and store it when not in use.

Last year I bought a few more umbrellas for my patios. Some to use now, some for replacements ….if I forget to close them up during a storm. They were on clearance at a sporting store for 1/2 of what the mid-price ranged umbrellas were, and they appear to be the same umbrella.

Tip #3 look for deals at the end of summer at places you would not expect to buy umbrellas at.

I went to Academy for something else and walked out with 4 umbrellas. This is also a great time to pick up outdoor furniture and cushions.

Remember to get a good solid stand for any umbrella that you buy. The stand will act as an anchor and help to hold it in place, particularly if it stands alone. I use these cement stands around the pool and they are a decent weight.

I hope some of these outdoor patio umbrella tips will help, as you cover up from the sun this summer. One more thing, don’t forget your sunscreen!
