How $20 renewed my 15 year old wood floors
How $20 renewed my 15-year-old wood floors. I get that everyone’s wood floors are different so the results may not be the same. The quality of wood, and the conditions are all different. Keep in mind, this is what worked for me and a product that help to create some shine and luster and did not require a complete refinish job.
The other day I posted a picture of my shiny floors here and got a lot of questions so I thought I would throw out some details here on the blog.
When we were building our home 15 years ago we decided to use oak on our floors. I elected to keep some slight imperfections in my wood. A floor that would grow with my family. Floors that could take a beating and yet still look good. Think hoover boards, big wheels, and roller skates and not get all freaked out. What I also wanted was a shine and luster. The entire backside of my house is windows/glass so the sun also does a number on my floors.
When we installed the wood floors, we had someone come in and finish the sanding and staining. The floors came out exactly as I wanted. They had shine, and luster and were slightly imperfect. Then I had kids….and things all changed with the traffic and wear on my floors.
You can see the before and after of where I applied it on my living room floor in the next photo.
How $20 renewed my 15-year-old wood floors
Fast forward 15 years later. I still love our floors, just not the dullness that they have. Since the whole house doesn’t need a major refinishing job and it’s not quite in the budget, I bought a restorer product that I really loved for my bedroom so I went out to get another bottle to do the living room… I thought it was the same stuff. They both started with an ‘R’. I picked up a bottle of Rejuvenate. The other was called Reviver.
For less than $20 and maybe 30 minutes per room, I had given back the shine and luster that my floors needed. The other stuff worked equally as well too since five years later my bedroom still has a decent shine to it. This is surprising since they say these products should be applied once a year, depending on floor traffic. Both products worked well for me and cost about the same.
You will basically need the product, an applicator pad, and a clean floor. I took pictures of the entire process although it is so simple to apply to your floors. I bought my stuff at Home Depot but also found it on Amazon. Most hardware stores may carry it in the flooring or cleaning section.
How to use it on your floors
- Clean your floor
The first thing you will want to do is clean your floors really well. Besides vacuuming I also clean my floors with Murphy’s Oil Soap.
- Spread the product on the floor
Next, take the product and spread it onto your floor. Use the applicator pad to spread evenly throughout the area. Make sure you apply it away from the room so you can get out without stepping on your floor. Once it dried, I applied another coat since we are not going to move the piano anytime soon, although one coat would have been sufficient.
Another bonus in addition to having pretty renewed floors is that the product doesn’t leave a stinky order that you have to smell for days later. I can’t say enough about how beautiful my floors look. If you have some wood floors that could use a little pick me up then you may want to try these products out.
