How I have slept during the last 364 nights and tips when buying a new mattress
Since it has been 364 nights sleeping on my new mattress, i thought it was time to give you an update on how I have slept during this time. You should know that I am a terrible sleeper…and I have a big time snorer ( think giant grizzly bear sound) sharing the bed with me. He’s the best and I love him dearly, but the combination does not make for the best nights sleep.
How I have slept during the last 364 nights and tips when buying a new mattress
So a little background first. I bought the furniture in my bedroom 18 years ago. The furniture along with a Sealy mattress was the first purchase as a newly married couple. I know ‘they’ say 8-10 years is about the lifespan of a mattress, but I beg to differ. I loved that mattress all the way to the very last sleep, which was a year ago.
Tip 1 – Consider an elevated pedestal for a snorer
Since my nights were getting more sleepless and the snoring…louder, we decided to change out the mattress. Our primary objective was to reduce the snoring so we purchased two pedestal frames along with two Beautyrest Black mattresses. The idea with going with the twin mattresses was so that we could both control and elevate at different levels. My husband seems to snore less when he is propped up.
Tip 2- Shop where there is a return window
We really liked the feel of the mattress except for two things. One was that my husband ( who tends to always be warm at night) always felt hot while sleeping. Second, although elevating at different levels was amazing and did control the snoring, was the big divide down the middle. I felt like snuggle times needed to be scheduled so we could be on one level. We were still within the 90 day return window so back to the mattress store I went.
Tip 3- Select based on comfort rather then price
I went into the mattress store and rather then looking at price ( which is what I would have done if my hubby had not suggested otherwise), I needed to look for comfort. I didn’t even ask the price on any mattress I laid on. We spend on average 1/3 of our day sleeping and if I was going to wait another 18 years, my new mattress should be looked at as an investment….not a bargain. So if you sleep for one third of your life and live till at least 75 years that’s over 9 thousand days. Makes total sense when you look at it that way, don’t you think?
The mattress that I bought
After nearly two hours I made a decision and bought a Talalay Bliss Mattress. I had never heard of this mattress line since it had been 18 years since I bought a mattress. It was probably the most expensive mattress in the store but it didn’t matter because laying on is magical. It’s cushioned but you don’t sink in. You honestly feel like you are floating while your entire body is supported. I did go with a King and was able to use the pedestal platform that we originally bought. Now if my hubby is snoring loudly, I take the remote and elevate his head. It seems to stop the snoring and I can get back to sleep. The mattress is all natural and made from a havea rubber tree so it should last a lot longer then 18 years.
For the last 364 days I have honestly woken up more refreshed and comfortable. And even though the snoring has not gone away completely, it has been reduced….to a baby bear sound. If you have any tips on for eliminating ‘baby bear snorers’ let me know.
Sweet dreams

I sleep with a snorer, too and he uses a mouth piece which really helps plus his head is up on two pillows. If he snores really badly I go to a guest bed, but knock on wood I haven’t had to do that for quite some time.
gotta love our snorers! happy friday. kids are back to school today! Yay
We just bought a new mattress to go with our new bed frame…..I “test drove” many mattresses and decided on a Stearns and Foster……the bed is in another room and have yet to sleep on it! Glad you are enjoying your mattress…I have never heard of that brand…sounds great…off to vote!
You can love the snorers by insisting they go to a sleep clinic and be evaluated for sleep apnea. This condition is real and is easily cured with CPAP!! We tried everything, but my snorer was beginning to suffer health issues from interrupted sleep. A couple days after CPAP, he was a new person. Slept well, felt better and much less grouchy! 😉 It does take a while to find the right mask, strap and settings, but believe me, you will both be better off!
I’m sure the mattress is wonder and I’m sorry for hijacking, but just consider it a small public service announcement.
My husband was a snorer. He went to a sleep clinic, as well and was diagnosed with sleep apnea. He has the CPAP and now we both sleep better. The noise, while not loud, took some getting used to but he is healthier and I get more sleep 😴
I wonder who is saying we need to replace our mattresses every 8 – 10 years. The mattress companies, perhaps. A good quality mattress should last longer and still give you the comfort & support needed.
I’ve never heard of this company. Who sells it?
My husband discovered Breathe Right Strips and they have worked miracles! He still snores, but it much quieter and the snoring doesn’t wake me up anymore. Glad you found a solution that works for both of you!
I am totally with you when they say 8-10 yrs on your mattress … you are just then getting it where you like it!!!! LOL!!!! Thank you for sharing
It sounds as though he needs to have a sleep study done. My husband snored so bad I had to start sleeping in another bedroom. His snoring rattled the walls, and I’m not kidding. After his sleep study, he began using a CPAP machine. It has changed his life and mine. I am in the process of shopping for a mattress and your info has helped. Thanks!
