Today’s thrifty idea is not only a good recycle of a pillow you probably don’t use but also a great painting tip. And the best part….it’s super easy.

I had the idea of throwing a little Halloween into the downstairs den….without spending any money. I started off with those ‘filler’ pillows that usually come with furniture. You know the ones that are generally too small to use. This particular one came from my Ektrop sofa in my den. You can read all about this amazing sofa here. As with other projects I have done using wood letters ( go out and get a set), I decided to use them as stencil spelling out ‘Boo’.  BTW, I have seen similar versions of pillows in the $25-$30 price range.

A collage is worth a thousand words. You get the idea.

A couple of things to consider for this project:

  1. insert a piece of wax paper between the pillow cover to avoid bleeding on the other side.
  2. flat or matte spray paint work the best
  3. Use another base color and let that dry completely before spraying your top color. I used white for the letters.
  4. Once your pillow is completely dry put in the wash. I also added some bleach to give the pillow cover some color variation and not look so orange. Washing the cover will also help to soften it up as well.

  1. That sure looked easy, and super cute! I wanted to tell you that there’s a commercial on TV that reminds me very much of your boys. It shows a little boy up to bat at a ball game and the fans are calling out that they are rooting for “Josh.” He turns toward the camera and every single time he reminds me of your sons for some reason.
