Duke Manor Farm Notables….moths, new pans and is it really fall out?
Happy Weekend! Did you know the first day of Fall was yesterday? May be hard to believe with almost 90 degree temps outside your window like it is here in Northeast Georgia. How are the temps where you live? Fallish yet?
I took this picture yesterday morning off the kitchen deck. The sun shining in the field gives me all the Fall feels. Can’t wait for the property to come to life with amazing fall color.
Moths in my pantry
So if tropical storm Irma wasn’t enough to annoy us with our power, cell and internet outages, the moths have. Pantry moths. All week I have been cleaning down the pantry, sealing up food in containers and wondering how in the heck those things get in. Yes, Moth Armageddon has frustrated me…just a little. I did buy this stainless steel bread box the other day to put breads and baked goods in. Don’t want the moths munching on my bagels now, do we? Have you had any moth encounters? What did you do to get rid of them?
Here’s some other bread boxes that I considered. In the end I chose the one above for the price and that the bottom could also be used as a cutting board.
Shop bread boxes…at reasonable prices
New cookware
Speaking of kitchen gadgets, a few weeks I walked into Walmart and stopped in my tracks over the pretty color of these frying pans. They are from the Pioneer Women line. I love the speckle blue color and how pretty they look when I am not whipping up a meal on the cook top. Besides , they were super reasonable and appear to be pretty durable. I have my eye on the dutch oven. You can see the entire line of cookware here.
Where are the real pumpkins?
I have yet to see the great pumpkin arrive in these parts or even little boo’s for that matter. We didn’t grow pumpkins in our garden this year so I am waiting for the local pumpkin patch to open up. For now, I have a few small faux ones that I have placed around, since it is officially fall season and used in a tour that I did last week. If you missed it, you can catch up here
We are tackling some chores around the property this week. Cutting and picking up limbs from the storm. Before you know it, we will be using it for firewood.
Hope your weekend is magical!
Grateful
For Fall

I had those those pesky pantry moths last year, and they are a real pain! Found the source…my lovable lab’s dog food. Seems that certain grains carry the moth eggs, and they hatch in a dark, cool environment (pantry) and are persistent! We changed dog food brands, changed stores where we bought the food, scrubbed, and disinfected everything in the pantry, and haven’t seen them since. Good luck!
I’ve had those moths before and they came from either the dogfood or the dog biscuits! They multiply like crazy!!! Once I got rid of the food, no more moths. Yuck, to think my dog was eating the larva all that time….. and loving it. 🙁
I enjoy reading and drooling over your postings! I in Gainesville and Wal Mart received pumpkins last week. However, I have yet to find any local place that has large white pumpkins. Perhaps you will have them soon.
Laura, I had an influx of moths many years ago when I made a gingerbread (not eatable) house out of graham crackers and dried flowers (turned out beautiful) and it took me forever to get rid of them. I now store EVERYTHING in plastic storage tubs (like the big pretzel tubs and medium tubs) and the best trick I learned is to put bay leaves in the flours, noodles, rice or baking mixes. Haven’t had a problem in at least 10 years! I hope this helps.
Yes, I had a problem with pantry moth once too. I dumped everything that wasn’t sealed. Wiped everything down and started over. My mother suggested keeping flour in the door of my freezer from then on. I also had a problem dog biscuits. It was gross. I keep them in a pretty acrylic canister with an air tight seal and one day reached in to get one and the container was full of worms. I buy much smaller amounts now so we use them up faster and haven’t had a problem with that. I had no idea that could happen.
Love the bread box! No, never even heard of these moths. What I fight is gnats for some reason.

I have had the pesky moths twice and now use glass containers or plastic for cereal, flour, grains, etc. Try Dr. Killigan’s Pantry Moth Traps from Amazon though; I now keep them on the shelves constantly to get any strays that come in.
Dog food and treats are a big culprit . Unfortunately, anything like that, that is not used quickly will get a mother infestation. From what I understand, the eggs are already in those things and flour too. Gross, but true.
Oh I can smell the fires burning now. It must be wonderful being outdoors by the fire at Duke Manor Farm with the sound of the crickets in the background.
Sorry to hear about the moths but after the reading the suggestions above, I am going to be careful with my dog food and treats. Our dog food is in a plastic bin but the treats are in their original bags – just waiting for those moths to invade! I see a pantry overhaul in my future… It’s been so hot here as well – almost as hot as your temps! Such a strange September! Have a great week!

I seem to spend my life fighting gnats. I did have moths once and they came from the dog food. Love your new bread box. xo Laura
