5 Outfit ideas for the family picture

Every year I think I am more prepared for the family picture then I was the last. All except for this year, when the pants didn’t fit, and the shoes were too big. Yes, this is the story of my life….when it comes to picture time. Oh, and let’s not forget it’s not an event that anyone in the family besides me, looks forward to. But they will get over it…..until the next family photo event that is.

5 Outfit ideas for the family picture

And despite our slight fashion malfunctions, I wanted to share 5 outfit ideas for the family picture so your event goes smooth, and without any fashion mishaps.

For Her

What ever I decide to wear, generally determines what the rest of the family attire will be. Once the style and color is picked out, then it’s fairly easy to pull together the other outfits. This year I decided to go ‘casual dressy’ opting for a simply black dress. Since the temps are a bit chilly out and my dress was short sleeve, I decided to wear my favorite jean jacket. The jean jacket was also a perfect choice, since we were doing the pictures outside on the property. A chunky pearl necklace and my black peep toe shoes complete my attire.

For Him

Since I knew our color scheme was black and navy, I put my husband in some jeans and a navy button up polo shirt. I find that my husband is the easiest onein the family to dress for things like this.

For boys

I have learned that my best chance of winning the family photo battle is to let the kids wear something that they are going to be comfortable in. If I have any chance of getting some great smiles, they have got to feel good in what you are putting on them. So for the boys, that means jeans.  Although I wanted the kids to coordinate, I did dress the boys in matching plaid shirts with some jeans. Unfortunately for them, the minecraft teeshirts didn’t make the cut.To break up all the plaid in the photo, I put a navy sweater on big brother with his plaid collar peeking out. That way they coordinate, but don’t look so matchy matchy.

 For Girls

My girl is always so fun to dress….once I figure her out. She’s not really the kind of gal that always wants to be fancy and dress up, although she likes to wear skirts that she can “twirl” in. I found this navy skirt with sequins that I paired with a simple white tee and her denim jacket. Again, dressy but casual at the same time….and she can twirl. She is sporting pretty headbands as long as I can get away with it, so I found this white flower petal headband that is almost as big as her head. For the shoes, I found slip- on’s like these silver ballet flats which are perfect for a dressy or casual outfit.

All’s I know is, I am happy camper that we have a new family photo and I saw smiles.  Here is a picture from the session that we had done 5 years ago for our last family picture. You can see my apparent love for blue, plaid and pretty hair bows. And I am actually wearing the same chunky pearl necklace, which was not planned. Which means it’s tradition now.

  1. I love your outfit combos and yes, I agree that you should choose your outfit first and work around it for the family. We just did family photos in Vermont about a month ago and used similar colors.
