Getting the most out of your Gardening… Using Containers
Gardening projects are in full bloom (no pun intended) and today it’s all about sharing creative and inspiring ways to getting the most out of your gardening…using containers.
I am thrilled to be joining up with my monthly challenge pals in bringing you creative ways to use containers. Be sure to stop by and see their beautiful inspiration and ideas. You can follow their links at the bottom of this post.
I wanted to share a couple ways and tips to use containers in your home or garden.
Tip #1. Use paint to update or change the color on old containers. The first time I did that was when I used chalk paint on a older flower container that I wanted to age. Since I never painted my outdoor containers, I honestly had no idea how it would turn out. It turned out amazing….and still looks great. You can see more of that project here. Since then I use exterior spray paint (for plastic) regularly on outdoor flower containers. Fastest way to update the plastic pot that your plants or flowers come in from the store is to paint it.
Tip 2: Think outside of the box and use non traditional containers for your flowers or plants. This project is still one of my favorite outdoor recycles that I ever did. Before you decide to kick it to the curb, how about putting some thought into how it would look with your beautiful blooms inside. As long as you can create the appropriate drainage for your plants, it should work as a container….and not a fire bowl…that you never use.
Tip 3: Layer Layer Layer Did you know that your containers will look so much more interesting and fuller if you layer in a few complementary flowers or plants. As soon as you layer in that second plant or flower it changes the whole look of your container. If you look at this planter and just imagine white petunias and nothing else, pretty but just a tad bit boring. Throw in some height and a pop of color and suddenly it becomes the star attraction on the patio.

Gorgeous ideas, Laura! Yes, I love layering, too. My hubby took it upon himself to plant my planters by the screened in porch to be helpful. I didn’t have the heart to tell him, that I never put just one variety in a pot. LOL! They are filling the pot nicely though. Your outdoor areas are stunning as always!
Everything looks so pretty! I love the fire pit idea 🙂 Stunning show!

I used the fax pot and made a water garden and my husband had a friend at work make me a copper spout the water comes out of. I use a small pump and as we enter our front door we enjoy the sounds of water. P.S. the deer love to drink out of it, have never figured their timing for a picture but in the am fresh tracks… so fun.
Great ideas, Laura. I love large pots of plants and flowers. It gets so hot here in Texas that the bigger the pot is the easier it is to control the moisture.
