What baby chicks really look like

Have you ever wondered what baby chicks really look like? Well today I am opening up the baby chick album to show you.  Before we built Duke Manor Farm, I had no idea that I would be raising animals. My closest experience to raising and supporting something other then a two legged companion, was the family dog when I was growing up, and the 2 dogs that my husband and I got when we met. Then we moved to the country, built Duke Manor Farm…..and things began to change.

Then two years ago we got our first set of chicks, who have since grown up to now look like this. You can read about some of that here.

Each year at this time, we get a few more chicks to add to the gang. Two weeks ago the ‘gang’ grew by 6 and I couldn’t wait to tell you about the baby chicks….and show you what baby chicks really look like. Just in the off chance you really wanted to know.

The baby chicks are about a 3-4 weeks old now. They are all girls and at this age they are called Pullets. After a year they will be hens, and hopefully will be motivated layers in about 6 months. We buy our chicks locally but I think next year, we will consider hatching our own.

At night the chicks are inside under a heat lamp because it’s a bit too cold for them to be outside. On the weekends when the weather is nice, we have them outside in a coop for a few hours. My sweet, animal loving girl is already trying to ‘train’ them and each one of them has already been named. The only problem is, the 4 lighter ones look exactly alike and the two black ones do to. But my girl insists that she knows how to tell them apart…and we all know that a 7 year old is always right.

  1. You’re bringing home memories for me – I grew up on a “mini farm” – just 2 cows, chickens, a couple of hogs each yr, and a pony, donkey, and one mule. I used to have to gather eggs for Mom, and I adored watching the baby chicks follow their mama around the yard picking at bugs and the feed we gave them. We had a mean rooster that would “flop” us quick as the blink of an eye!

  2. They are so precious!!! I used to raise Cockatiels (as I snatched them away from the mother a week after they hatched and then hand fed them so they learned to bond with people as pets). I think I’d love to live on a farm but I’m a little too lazy for all that work! lol!

  3. Well I’m inclined to believe she does know which chick is which. My son knew each of his and he didn’t even give all of them names.
