7 Living Rooms you would just love to sit in

Today, I am sharing 7 Living rooms you would just love to sit in. And for very good reason.  A few months back, I finally decided to quit trying to make my living room furniture work for me ….and I sold it to a friend. Years of decor changes, paint changes and pillow changes in the Living Room,  I decided that it was the furniture in the room that wasn’t working, not all those other things. I loved the furniture when I bought it 17 years ago and how it served our previous home, I just wasn’t in love with it,  for this home.

So with my slate clean, literally there is nothing in the room right now, I am trying to decide on what I want to do with the space next. Truth be told, if I had to do a rebuild of our home, I wouldn’t even have a Living Room…or a Dining Room for that matter. You can see that space here. Sadly, this room never really gets the use it deserves , and if it wasn’t for it’s location and the fact that you see it when you walk through the front door, I would probably turn it into a petting zoo for the kids.

Something that I would consider, is swapping out the idea of couches and having 4 chairs instead.

My kids don’t really hang in the space, so light and white would not be an issue. I love this white and airy feel here

I love the fun pops of color against the white backdrop from here. I would probably eliminate the settee, some of the lamps and the rug.

Despite the rustic touches with the beams, which I love, the furnishings and colors add such a soft peaceful vibe to this space. I am just not convinced that I want to commit to a sofa that has color. My previous sofa in this space was a goldish color.

I love the coastal vibe going on here  with the blues, and I would consider doing my ceiling like this. I would probably change out the tables and have one less couch in my space.

another in neutral with blue. I thought the windows and doors  in this room looked similar to what I have.

And probably my most favorite of everything I have seen , a room that I keep going back to every since I saw it about a year ago is this space from here. I love the style, the colors, and the lack of fuss in this transitional living room.

Aren’t these 7 living rooms you would just love to sit in? And one day when I make up my mind, and don’t turn the room into a petting zoo, maybe there will be 8.

When it comes to living room spaces, what styles and colors do you tend to lean towards?

  1. Thanks for this post, Laura. We’ll be starting on our retirement home this spring and I’ve been pouring over images of room design/decor to get ideas. I’m drawn to light and bright, as well. The sixth room is my favorite! It has the transom windows, bookshelves and French doors that we’ll have. It is truly a room I’d love to spend a lot of time in!

  2. Lauren,
I’m loke you – just re-doing my living room after 18 yrs of the beautiful plaid furniture I had from Wesley Hall. It pays to buy good furniture and it showed! I am now doing my living room in shades of aqua, teal, and mocha. My 2 highleg recliners are mocha and the couch will be teal – made by King Hickory and should last another 20 yrs! I’ve painted the walls in a lightened shade of “Swimming” by Sherwin Williams. I plan to put touches of aqua, orange, a little red, green, and bright yellow in accents such as pictures and pillows. Do you mix the types of frames (color, especially) in your decor? I like white wood frames but also have pops of gold and dark brown and black. I will have 2 gallery walls.

    1. Hi Barbara- we bought good too, which is probably why I had a hard time letting it go, even though it was much too formal for our lifestyle. Your space sounds like it is going to be so pretty. On the gallery wall- i would probably keep the frame colors consistent, although the size and matting ( which should also be kept the same color) can vary. send me a pic when you are done with your space, i would love to see it.

  3. Perhaps, you could rethink the use of your livingroom and dining room. It’s a shame to have rooms that are rarely, if ever, used. I look forward to seeing what you choose for your room.
My favourite of the seven rooms is the second, with it’s soft while palette.

  4. The second to the last (I think your favorite) is just fantastic, Laura. There are very few accent colors i like more than blue. The rug and pillows are so nice and I love the ton of windows.

I know how you feel about kids and furniture but if it’s a room that’s not used too much, go for it! It was a great idea to empty out your whole room—don’t rush it. But do something you really love, not a huge change that you may later regret. That’s okay with paint or an area rug, furniture is a big deal But you know that, dear. I’m working on our lakehouse Great Room and it’s empty, too. Scary!!!! 😉
