How to apply Gloss Sealer to Stone

How to apply gloss sealer to stone to achieve a clean, gloss look to your stone porch or patio.

As you know we love entertaining and sitting on our front porch. Particularly when the weather is just right. Something else that I like to look just right is the stone floor. Every year the porch goes through a decent cleaning that includes pressuring washing, windows, wiping down furniture, and applying gloss sealer to the stone floor.

One of the questions I get enough of here on the blog is ‘how do you get your floor so shiny”? I thought I would show you what I do and how easy it is to achieve such a beautiful finish on your stone.

How to apply Gloss Sealer to Stone

We generally apply a sealer to our stone patios once a year. We prefer to have a nice glossy finish on the surface. Kinda like it was just washed off and wet-looking. In the past, we have used different products, but this time decided to use a product from SW. I am also a fan of the Behr sealer as well. I must tell you …. We loved it. If you are looking for luster and shine…this is it.

Basically, this is a one-man show, not difficult, and depending on the area can be done in a short amount of time.

Apply the product on a clean surface. I had pressure washed a couple of days before. You will want to make sure that it a free of any debris or dirt before you apply the sealer…and dry.

What you will need for this project.

  • Roller for a semi-smooth surface
  • extension rod
  • paint tray
  • clear gloss sealer. I used 1 1/2 containers for the surfaces that you see.
  • small brush for cutting in the edges.

What you do

Typically I would use a handle on my roller but I couldn’t find one this day nor could I find a paint tray so I basically applied my sealer to the porch by pouring a bit of it on the surface and rolling it on evenly to the stone.  Repeat the process until your entire surface is covered.

Don’t worry about the white residue that you see when you are done applying the sealer. It will dry clear…I promise.

Here are some before and after shots of the surface so you can see what a difference the gloss sealer makes to the stone floor. Dull to luster.

Follow the instructions on the container for the dry time.  As hard as it was to not want to put furniture back on the porch that day, I let it dry for at least 24 hours.

  1. So glad you posted this. We desperately need to seal the end of our driveway where we have the colored stamped concrete before it completely fades away!

  2. It looks really beautiful.we use this product on the pavers around the pool. However, one day I got the bright idea to spray my stone fireplace inside the house. You have to do it for three days and leave windows open. Well it was too hot and I only left open the windows for several hours. The fumes gathered to,the loft where I was sleeping. I ended up in the hospital with what they thought was a stroke. Just super high from smelling that stuff for three days. After the second day , you really don’t smell it. The fireplace looks really good , but don’t think I’ll do that again and stay in the house. You might want to do an outdoor fireplace. I used a garden sprayer, super easy and looks really good. What is your next project?

    1. oh no. that’s some experience. i have only used this stuff outside…thankfully not the situation you had. Right now we are working in the backyard and redoing our outdoor water feature/pond so we can move our Koi fish in. hope you are having a great week!

    1. my bil is in the paver business so i i have known about saaler for a long time. we usually give anything stone around here ( patios, floor in the family room) a regular update. Hope you are having a great week!

  3. We have stamped concrete around the whole pool area. Would you recommend it for wet feet around a pool?

    1. not sure about that. with all the water and wet it could get slippery. On my front porch it isn’t such an issue cause it generally does not get wet. Perhaps there are less gloss and slickness products out there. I would check with your local paint store. I use Sherwin Williams. Have a great day!
