Guest Room Makeover….. using paint and a new duvet cover

Before I share the changes to my guest room,  I wanted to clarify that when I say “makeover” I really mean a gallon of white paint and a $40.00 duvet cover. ….

oh, and a cute little owl lamp base for a side table.

So, let me back up and give you the history of this space. When we first designed the house, this room was intended to be my husbands office. The house was quiet for a while, we then had kids, kids got loud so dad had to move out….. to his new office here.

So everyone was happy including dad, kids and the guests, when I put a bed in this space and called it a guest room. Although it’s a small space and just big enough for a queen bed and table, it performs it’s purpose perfectly. Just ask my last guest who stayed a little longer then expected.

This is what the space looked like before I changed the wall color and bedding. And if you are wondering, I planked these walls 13 years ago when we first moved in.

If you ask me, I  think the real features in the room are the view and the light pouring into the space. It has three sided windows and has a view of the lake. Not too bad if you are a heavy sleeper and the morning sun won’t bother you too much. The linen curtain panels I have up, are really for the city guests who aren’t use to having anything on the windows. Besides, it makes them happy.

And between you and I, if the beautiful morning light doesn’t wake them…..the kids will.

PS- If you wondering where the guests keep there things, no worries, right outside the door is an armoire for hanging and stuff.

  1. Laura when can we come for a stay. Windows, lake view and that bed are perfect. Don't mind the kids our two pups would give them a run for their money.

  2. That is my kind of beautiful makeover…a new duvet and beautiful new color on the walls….and must say, it's all about the view…So great that you have 3 little alarm clocks that sound a lot nicer that a buzzing clock…Gorgeous room.

  3. Laura,

I love this! The windows and planks are really great features. I like a sunny room unless I want to take a nap or read on my bed but I really never get a chance to do that. That bed is fantastic and I love the duvet. The sign is precious. I think anyone would be relaxed and thrilled to have a nice space to stay in your home.

It's really weird that you posted this today…my youngest daughter moved out in February (sniff) and we are turning her room into a guest room. The painter just finished today (I would rather clean gutters than paint). I did it in Alpaca by SW and it's the prettiest, most perfect light gray I've ever seen. And the trim is crisp white. Now my ideas come to a screeching halt!! Did you have an inspiration? I need a bed and bedding, but otherwise I'm shopping the house. Just not sure if I want to do a cottage, vintage or really simple neutral room. I'm SO bad with decisions. I may be done around Christmas!

Sorry for my post in your comment section! đŸ™‚

  4. That is such a beautiful guestroom. I love the way the bed is in the window nook. I love the iron bed itself too. It looks so old fashioned. I don't have a guestroom since I don't have any extra bedrooms but if I did I would want it to look like yours.
