The ultimate tree fort adventure

I will never forget that sunny afternoon we bought our first cedar play fort. Driving home, my husband was thinking strategically about all the pieces that needed to be secured together, while I grew nostalgic…. thinking that I wanted it to be their forever play fort . The play fort that they would grow old on….  The play fort that lifelong memories would be created on and that visions like this would last forever.

And then without warning, they got too tall for the fort roof. They were a bit too big for the baby swings and the covered picnic table didn’t give them all enough room when they all sat down for a snack. So my adventurous, and clever kids talked Dad into creating another fort with a real tree. And budget-minded mom talked dad into using the existing play fort, and just adding on to it, instead.  So a tree was chosen and wood was moved….to a new fort.

We were able to build a platform around a tree and attach the old play fort, less the swings, roof and picnic table, in order to create the Ultimate tree fort. Our timing was quite perfect since we built it in the Spring so that the kids could utilize this space all summer.  It’s here where imaginations take shape, about outdoor adventures, while eating fruit in a tutu, while your brother looks out for wild animals.

And while the fort with a tree is new to them, maintaining a healthy lifestyle for my kids, is not. So while they are spending hours in the fort, snacks are usually a must. So I created a ‘snack line’ similar to a zip line, so that I can put a bunch of their favorite healthy snacks in a basket to enjoy while they are outdoors.

To create my ‘snack line’ I tied a rope around two trees. For my line I used an outdoor nylon rope. You can also use outdoor cable. On each tree I attached a pulley mechanism which will help guide and move the rope along in between each tree.

Next I attached a basket to the line by using one of the ends of the rope and putting the rope through the handles of the basket. You can also use a bucket, as long as it has handles. Ideally you can attach a hook to the rope and attach your basket that way, so that you don’t have to mess with your rope each time.   Now, move your rope in the direction you want your basket to go  …until it reaches here.

Lucky for me, one of their favorite snacks are smoothies. What mom wouldn’t love a yogurt packed with plenty of nutrition for their little adventure seekers?  And since Go Wild! is 25% larger than the leading kids’ smoothies, my kids can stay fuller and more alert while outdoors….seeking adventures. Favorites in our house are the Tropical Twist and Savage Strawberry, although there’s also Go Bananas and Berry. The best part, for me, is that  they offer twice the calcium (than the leading kids’ smoothies) with no artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners or high-fructose corn syrup….they are energetic enough. Plus, they’re gluten-free.

  1. Your kids are beautiful. So cute and they were having great time. Giving lots of blogger kids model experience showing your projects and talking about products good for them. Kids so love a fort, their own little place to imagine all kinds of fun adventures. They sure do have a habit of out growing things don't they? Smart idea for the snack line and so handy, save lot of foot travel and more fun for the kids.
I could see water in background of that first photo of little girl swinging, do you have a river flowing thru your property? You must have a good sized place, lot to take care of as well as to enjoy. Great post, glad you shared this project.
