3 Tips for a Healthier Life
I have never shared my journey to get to motherhood before, but it was a long, bumpy road. A road filled with emotion, heartache, frustration, uncertainty and ultimately joy. Much Joy. Joy to the 3rd degree.
It’s no secret, but I am a bit older than most of the 20 something year old mom’s waiting for their kids in the car ride line at school. But that’s okay … I tell myself that my kids will keep me young… with or without a few gray hairs. And so it is for that reason, I do everything I can to make sure my future is healthy, active and overall I am living an amazing life, for myself and for my family.
And unlike my road to get to motherhood, this road that I travel for my future is a bit clearer, although often times, chaotic and crazy.
Here are my 3 “B’s” to ensuring a happy and healthy future.
Be Happy. Did you know that happier people live longer and tend to be healthier? Studies (like this one and this one)have shown that happier people have less risk of high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease. I do my best each day to wake up with a happy heart and go to bed with a happier heart. I make a note of everything that I am grateful for. I say Thank You.
Be Healthy. Exercise is built into my lifestyle. A workout, whether it is at the gym or a walk in the park, is scheduled like any other appointment on the weekly calendar. Staying healthy also includes eating right… when I am not secretly grazing off my kids’ dinner plates.
Balance-I am always seeking to find balance in my life. On the other side of motherhood and being a wife, is a passionate woman who likes to be creative. My energy may take me to a project, painting or gardening. When I am doing those things that I love doing, I am not spending time worrying or thinking about the other side (motherhood). I immerse myself in whatever I am doing… to be in that moment. I find that these moments and time focusing on myself, allow me to be a better mother, wife, and friend.

I had a very long painful journey to motherhood but I share my journey with others to give them hope. I am considered an 'older' Mom, had my first and only at the age of 39. Old isn't a number it is how you feel. Eating right, exercise, lots of water, and finding time for you loves/hobbies/comfort. Yes, I will always be the Mom who is 15-20 yrs older than most and asked if you are grandma but I have learned to laugh, enjoy my sweet girl, and be thankful.
I had my boys at 37 and 39 so I am older than most of the moms in their classes. But if I started having children when I was younger I don't think I would have been as good as a mom. I have become so much more aware of things as I have gotten older. I try to eat healthy but exercise is where I slack off. I know how important it is so I really have to build in some time for that! Thanks for the reminder!

I love your happy thankful heart, Laura… not only are you doing yourself good, but you're modeling gratitude for your children, too. As a teacher of littles, that is something lacking in so many of students' lives. Bravo. 🙂

I can relate. I had my second baby at 40. I've been really trying to live in the moment more and not worry as much about the past or the future. It's a struggle sometimes but I'm really making an effort. I also have been exercising more. It's the first time in my life that I have worked out on a consistent basis and I feel great and look better than I did in my twenties…except for the stretched tummy and national geographic boobs, of course. Ah well, no one is perfect;)
I'm not an old mother I'm just old! In 1989 I decided I wanted to be a healthy mom that my kids would be proud of. I started eating well and exercising daily. Then I went to grad school and got a master's degree in health promotion and exercise science. I like to brag that I've exercised every day since 1989. I do still eat a lot of cake and that probably won't change but my attitudes about healthy living has had a great impact on my children and that makes me very thankful that I made/make the effort.
