Stop The Abuse Of Your Hardwood Floors

I know, I know….Hardwood floors. Boooorinnnngggg.
Not a subject that we talk about frequently, but one that needs attention from time to time just like an orchid.

So today, albeit not as excited as a room reveal , we are talking about ways to stop the abuse of your hardwood floors.

But if you don’t fall into the category of having hardwood floors, getting hardwood floors in your future or are a guru of home cleaning tips, you must know someone who has hardwoods and would benefit from this information.

Back to exciting floors.  For the record I am not a flooring professional nor did I take flooring 101 in college, but being the rightful owner of a house full of hardwood, I think I am qualified to share an opinion or two.

I love my hardwood floors. I actually have 5 inch  #2 oak planks, which means they are in the second run when being processed through the mill. I wanted the #2 wood. I wanted them to have the knots, the holes and all the imperfections, but over the years they have lost a bit of their luster and shine.

With pink big wheels and roller skates buzzing around on these floors,  I will from time to time freshen them up with a product called Reviver. I wanted to share  a quick demonstration of how it works so you can stop abusing your hardwoods too!

Steps to stop the abuse of your hardwood floors

First clean your floors with whatever method you use. I generally vacuum and then use my Shark Steamer/Vacuum to clean the floors.
BTW- another great product if you are in the market for a floor steamer. It omits just enough steam to NOT leave a wet residue on your floor surface.

After your floors are dry and you are ready to use your reviver product, you will also need a soft lambs wool floor applicator.  I picked the reviver product and brush up at Home Depot in the flooring section. I attached the applicator to a broom handle that I already had.

You can follow the very small you may need a magnifier instructions on the back of the bottle or simply spread the product in a “S” shape on the floor and mop into your wood. It is important to use smooth even coats in the same direction when applying the product to your floors.

After my first coat dried I applied a second coat using the same process. Here’s a pic of the finished floor with two coats of Reviver.

At some point I will have to think about re-sanding and re-staining but for now, I am totally satisfied and love the renewed luster and shine and……

  1. thanks for the good info!
Just wondering about the steamer to clean though. I have been looking at that idea but when I do research all the experts say it's a no no for your floors to get wet.
So I am confused, we have hickory hardwood.

  2. I've too have always heard that you should not put any water on your hard wood. Did you use the steamer because it only emits very low amounts of moisture? It does seem to be a great idea because, after all, floors can get so nasty. Thank you for sharing!

  3. Your floors look great Laura…your daughter riding thru the house reminded me of something long ago…when I made a comment that the grass was being beat down by the many soccer games in the back yard, my husband responded, "are we raising kids or grass" ??…so we sacrifice grass and floors for the enjoyment of our kids..and deal with the aftermath with fertilizer and great floor products!!

  4. I love Shirley's comment.:-)

Does this work when there is a coat of poly on the flooring?

We have oak hardwoods installed on site, when we built our house 10 years ago. They go through the foyer, dining room, living room, master bedroom, stairs and landings, and upstairs hallway. We've used the shark steamer with success, too. I would love to use the reviver if it works with the poly finish.

  5. Thank you for this information. Practically my whole house has hardwood floors which are a mess. I can't afford to have them professionally redone but I wasn't sure there was any reasonable alternative. Yours is the first full review I've seen of this simpler DIY process. I'll try it and see if I get the same satisfactory results.

  6. I need to get a floor steamer. I bought a jug of Bona rejuvinator a couple years ago and have not used it yet, and the floor sure needs it.

  7. Great info! I've been scared to use anything on my hardwoods except steaming them (they're stained cherry with a high gloss). Do you know if reviver works on an already high glossed wood? I think research is in my future! LOL!! Thanks….your floors are beautiful!~~Angela

  8. WOW!!!! this is just what i need!!!! thank you thank you for the info and the new product. looks like my hardwood floors are going to be getting a little bit of a spa treatment…just what the doctor ordered…thank you thank you! : ) sending hugs and letting you know that you ROCK!!!! but you knew that all ready ; )

  9. I love my hardwood floor. I clean mine (actually I have a cleaning service) with vinegar and water 3 out of 4 weeks. I use a hardwood cleaner once a month. The guy who installed our flooring gave me that hint. I LOVE hardwood flooring.

    Hugs,

  10. Thank you!!!!! We have to out our old house BACK on the market and I wanted to REVIVE the hardwoods. I will get this product tomorrow!!! PERFECT timing! XO, Pinky

  11. We have Bruce hardwood floors, which are engineered hardwood. Love them! They are beautiful and glossy, though they do scratch easily. The only thing I use to clean them is the only thing that's recommended – Bruce hardwood floor cleaner. Otherwise, I just use the vacuum cleaner or Swiffer cloths to keep them dust-free.

  12. Hi Laura,
I think you've sold me on the Shark steamer/cleaner! We have old pine floors that we refinished when we moved in. But because pine is such a soft wood, they are full of scratches caused by the dog! May try the floor reviver, but we'll have to have the floors sanded someday to remove the scratches!

  13. Thank you for this post. Glad to see there is another product out there. We have used rejuvenate before, but I will definitely try this. Is this product expensive and how much does it cover?

  14. Hi Laura! First things first. Thank you for joining 'At The Hop' link up party! We are so happy to have you! You have a fabulous blog and I've enjoyed reading your posts.

I've owned a residential cleaning service for 14 years so I was particularly interested in this post. I have personally used a similar type product (I think it's called 'Restore') and was very happy with the results also. If I had any issue at all it was with the fact it had to be put on nearly perfectly or any missed spots would be somewhat obvious.

A few of your readers expressed concern about water on wood. Let me chime in and say that water is not a problem unless it 'sits' on the wood. A damp mop or a steamer would not be an issue. I recommend not cleaning your floors more than every other week unless you have high traffic. Sweeping or vacuuming is fine as often as you like, but every other week mopping is adequate for most situations. Cleaning with products like Murphy's, mop n glo, orange glo (not recommended) can do more harm than good. Bona or poly care are good to use maybe once a month.

Your floors are gorgeous and I can understand why you would want #2. They look great!

  15. Your floors are gorgeous Laura! Great information on caring for them too, thank you for sharing at Pretty Things this week, hope to see you again tomorrow night ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. I have SEVERAL Shark items and I do like ALL of them (the Navigator is my FAVORITE), so when I was sick of having the Shark carpet sweeper AND the pocket steamer cluttering up the dining room I decided to try the vac and steam (had a coupon too). It vacuums the floors better than the sweeper, but does not pick up big chunks of food (the sweeper does) and is specifically only for hard floors. The steamer function works SO MUCH BETTER than the pocket steamer! it's SUPER EASY to switch from vacuum to steamer – GREAT design. My only complaint is that it is VERY LOUD in both modes (especially the vacuum!!)
