Baby it’s Cold Outside and My Winter Mantle

This time of the year, would you rather been skiing on the slopes of Colorado or basking in the sun on a Caribbean Island?

Although it’s been cold outside in Northeast Georgia,  I was able to bring some winter-y vibes to the mantle inside, while staying warm in the process.  My mantle recently got a makeover and I love how things look against the new distressed white color.
You can read about my lunch hour makeover here.

Creating my winterscape was a lot easier then getting the kids all bundled up to go outside on a winter day, perhaps because they see dad wearing shorts in 27 degree weather. Yes, the crazy man in the shorts in the middle of winter is my husband.

I found these cute little balls at Pier One. One strongly resembles a snow ball, the other… well I kinda think it looks like a brillo pad or perfectly shaped steel wool. You think?

I picked up some branches from the yard and sprayed them with ‘snow in a can’. I have never used that stuff, but surprisingly it looked like the real deal after it was dry.

Everyday my kids will ask if it is going to snow today. Perhaps I will just get cases of snow in the can, go to the front yard and spray that stuff until I have mounds of fluffy white ‘pretend’ snow.
I wonder if that would work?
And who knows, maybe if my husband saw snow in the front yard he might even put some pants on……..
I just won’t tell him it’s not real.
Grateful for~
Kids going back to school today so I can clean the house with no interruptions.

  1. That looks so pretty and clean! I love leaving the wintery decorations up through January. I love the look of the branches in the clear vases…what did you poke down into the vases? It looks like cheesecloth or tuile…I think that look would also be pretty on wedding reception tables!

  2. Love the Winter Mantle very beautiful and now I have some great idea's. But I was wondering how the snow balls would look in my California home.

  3. Beautiful Laura… I love how you mixed all those wonderful textures…the mantel reminds me of being in a 5 star ski lodge resort…I can see you in front of the fire in your cute ski outfit and hubby by your side in shorts and a t-shirt…you with cute Uggs and him…flip flops…:)

  4. I think it is a southern man thing. They just refuse to give up their shorts and short sleeve tee shirts. Love the idea for spraying the limbs with snow (or front yard)
    Hugs,
    Laura

  5. Bah ha ha … your hubby and mine would be the fools out there in the snow with shorts! I love your winter mantel … beautiful! The mercury you mixed in is gorgeous! Love your *cute, little balls,* too! By the way, how hard was it to add your "pin it" button … I'm afraid of messing around with html codes, but I just need to go for it, right? Heeelp.

  6. Ahhh…..winter!…..forgotten what that is like (I live in tropical Queensland, Australia). How I would love a "winter mantle"! Yours is very tasteful.

  7. Very pretty Laura! We pray for snow here too! We didn't see a flake last year! AND its supposed to be close to 80 degrees this coming weekend. Crazy!

  8. Lovely and simple — my kinda mantel! I use that spray snow on all kinds of winter projects at school — kiddos love it!

BTW, my hubs wears shorts all winter, too… nutty!

  9. I really like that winter mantle. I am always so confused about what to do with my mantle after New Years. Mine is looking pretty drab about now after all the hoola-baloo of the Christmas mantle! LOL! Thanks for the great ideas!

  10. Your winter mantel is lovely, your snow laden branches look really pretty. If you want real snow, come and visit me in Canada. We have the real deal! 🙂
    Hugs, Cindy

  11. i have eight cans of flocking I could send you if you decide to try that snow in a can thing in your yard!

That would probably give you as much snow as a typical Atlanta blizzard.

Last year, I thought I might flock our Christmas tree, then decided against it. So, now I have 8 flocking cans of flocking to use somehow. I love how it looks on your branches. And I love the simplicity of your mantel.

  12. Northeast GA? That's where I'm at! (Jefferson, actually.) I love when I find out my favorite bloggers are nearby. 🙂
